Prayers for Your Children

My adult children have all left the nest, the last one off to college just this past month.  As they find their new independence and live far away from home, I am reminded of my great calling to pray for them regularly.  The best way to pray for someone is to follow the models we find in scripture, so I started with this Levitical blessing from Numbers 6:24-27.

The LORD bless you...

We pray for our children that God would bless their lives, knowing that in this world there are many troubles and He never promised to keep us from them (John 16:33).  However, we know that blessings follow obedience and blessings are always found when living in His will.  We pray that God's good gifts would come to our children (Luke 11:11-13) because He is a good Father and He loves our kids just as much as we do!

May He bless them with peace that is beyond understanding no matter what challenges they face (Philippians 4:4-7).

May He bless them with good jobs, godly spouses, children to love, and a safe home.

May He bless them mostly with His own dear presence to cheer and to guide.

And keep you...

May He guard our children from life-alerting harm or decisions (I know they need to grow through adversity, challenges and difficulties but I pray their spirits would not be broken by hardship).

May He protect them from the evil one physically, emotionally, and spiritually (Satan's arrows come in the form of fear, accusation, despairing, questioning God's sovereignty, living recklessly.)

The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you...

May my children know deep in their soul the great gift of grace that God has poured out on them through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:8-9).

May they feel the warmth of affection and love from the Father like a ray of sunshine in their heart.

The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

In a world of constant arguing, may God grant peace to our children.  The peace of knowing they have been reconciled to God and are no longer His enemy, which in turn gives them the ability to be a peacemaker to the world.  May they share His favor and His peace with others (Matthew 5:9).

Our Abba Father (13)

Prayer is more than thoughts and feelings expressed in words. It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being to God our Abba Father. It is Divine Union. — Richard Foster In the Old testament, the average believer worshiped God from afar. They may have revered Him, praying to Him by His holy name "Yahweh" but they did not throw His holy name around as if He were a buddy, a close friend, or a family member. When Jesus came he spoke often of His Father in heaven, which may have sounded strange to people. They did not call God by the name of Father and certainly not by the intimate, personal name of "Abba" (much like our word daddy). The Lord's prayer starts with a reminder of our close relationship to God: "Our Father, in heaven...." The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 gives us a glimpse into the Father-heart of our God and how He views us as His children. Remember the story where the son takes his father's inheritance, squanders i...

But what if I am not good enough?

My dear friend, You asked me how you could be certain that when you cross the threshold from this life into the next that you will be greeted by the welcoming arms of our Lord.  The very fact that you are questioning this core element of faith tells me something about your heart; it says much about the state of your soul.  You see, in one of Jesus' first sermons, he declared what God was looking for, what type of person might enter the kingdom of heaven..   Matthew 5:3-5 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are those who mourn,  for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,  for they will inherit the earth." You have looked deep into your heart and you know that you are not worthy of the Holy God Almighty.  You know your humanity, your weakness, your sin and you sense that you could never stand in the presence of a holy God, the God who IS worthy .  And with all of your heart you have...

God is Love - 14

God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.   -Saint Augustine In this world, we are often seeking love, whether it's the bond of close family members, bosom friendships, or romantic love. We long to be loved and to know love. When the Bible says God IS love, we must realize that love is not just a character trait of God, it is His very being. If we want to know what love looks like, we have to look to God. His love for us very simply is stated in John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." In romantic novels or movies, we hear quotes about how love conquers all, or love is the answer, etc. There is truth there - we were created with a longing to be loved and it can only be met by the unconditional love of our Creator. W orship the God who IS love Lord, I am amazed that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that could separate me from your great love. I am e...
