Giving Thanks to the Bread of Life (Day 4)

Blaise Pascal once said:

“What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?
This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself”

In this world, we thirst, we hunger for something more, something that will quench our deepest needs.  The scripture says we build our own wells, broken wells that will never satisfy.  In the Lord's prayer, we are called to ask God for our daily bread - could Jesus have meant more than simple sustenance?  Could He have been referring to heavenly manna? To the only bread that will truly satisfy?

Worship Jesus, the Bread of Life

Lord, so many times I think about my needs only in the physical sense - I’m hungry, I’m tired, I’m thirsty.  But, my deepest need is YOU.  Today, I thank You for being enough for all I need, for being the One who will satisfy my soul at the deepest level.  You are the bread of life and Your nourishment sustains me and fills me.

John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Lord, I want to live on Your words; increase my hunger for the things of God.  May I turn to You for life-giving words each day.

Deuteronomy 8:3

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins, your poverty of spirit, mourning over your sins and craving for more of God

God, today I recognize that I am poor in spirit, I cannot do what is right in my own power - I need You.  I want to have a right attitude to my sinful heart, to mourn my sinfulness while also knowing that You have the power to bring comfort and transform me when I come to You with a humble heart.

Matthew 5:3-10

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,

    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,

    for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

    for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

    for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,

    for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,

    for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

    for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

God, may I seek You above all else.  Your love truly is better than anything else this life has to offer!

Psalm 63

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.

I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.

Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.

I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.

They will be given over to the sword
    and become food for jackals.

But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Our Abba Father (13)

Prayer is more than thoughts and feelings expressed in words. It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being to God our Abba Father. It is Divine Union. — Richard Foster In the Old testament, the average believer worshiped God from afar. They may have revered Him, praying to Him by His holy name "Yahweh" but they did not throw His holy name around as if He were a buddy, a close friend, or a family member. When Jesus came he spoke often of His Father in heaven, which may have sounded strange to people. They did not call God by the name of Father and certainly not by the intimate, personal name of "Abba" (much like our word daddy). The Lord's prayer starts with a reminder of our close relationship to God: "Our Father, in heaven...." The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 gives us a glimpse into the Father-heart of our God and how He views us as His children. Remember the story where the son takes his father's inheritance, squanders i...

Alpha and Omega (I am) - 10

Since God knows our future, our personalities, and our capacity to listen, he isn't ever going to say more to us than we can deal with at the moment.  — Charles Stanley As I write this, it is the beginning of a new year, with all of the resolutions and best intentions to start afresh. Each year feels like the next leg in the race of life and we hear the shots go off and start off the year strong, acting like we are sprinters, but will we maintain this race all the way until the end? Are you feeling fatigued? Energetic? or worn out from this battle? God's Word offers us a fresh start every day as we follow the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and Omega, the God who is beyond time, the One who created time. Whether we are feeling exhausted, like there's never enough time, or refreshed and ready, God is there with us for every season of life. W orship the Alpha and Omega Lord, time is a human constraint that is limited for me, but You were before time began and You will...

But what if I am not good enough?

 My dear friend, You asked me how you could be certain that when you cross the threshold from this life into the next that you will be greeted by the welcoming arms of our Lord.  The very fact that you are questioning this core element of faith tells me something about your heart; it says much about the state of your soul.  You see, in one of Jesus' first sermons, he declared what God was looking for, what type of person might enter the kingdom of heaven..   Matthew 5:3-5 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are those who mourn,  for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,  for they will inherit the earth." You have looked deep into your heart and you know that you are not worthy of the Holy God Almighty.  You know your humanity, your weakness, your sin and you sense that you could never stand in the presence of a holy God, the God who IS worthy .  And with all of your heart you have...
