Immanuel (8)

In worship, God imparts himself to us.

— C.S.Lewis

Immanuel is the most tender name for God; it the name given to Jesus, who came as God in the flesh, giving up all His rights as the King of the universe so that he could walk with us in human flesh. This most humble sacrifice opened wide the door for us to have relationship with Him. The birth of Jesus gives us window into God's heart for us; that He would give up His son so that we might be united with Him. How wonderful this gift from His heart to us!

Worship the God who is present, our Immanuel

Oh Lord, what an amazing miracle that You left the glories of heaven to humbly become a human and live on earth among us. Our Immanuel (God WITH us); our God who desires relationship with us, we love You and worship you.

Matthew 1:21-23

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.  ”All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”(which means “God with us”).

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Lord, I am so grateful for the gift of Immanuel, Your presence among us, the gift of a savior to bring us back to You. Thank you for the gift of grace which shows us that although we cannot do anything of our own power to cover our sins, You gave the sacrifice that would pay the price for us. You redeemed us. May I be overwhelmed by Your grace and treasure the greatest gift ever given.

Ephesians 2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God

Jesus, I am so grateful that You came as the only high priest whose sacrifice was acceptable unto eternity, allowing You to sit at the right hand of the Father after Your service. When I come to bring my failures to You, my great high priest, I am not only forgiven by your sacrifice, I am understood. I come to you today seeking mercy and grace.

Hebrews 4:15-16

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

Lord, I want to have the same mindset you have - humility and the heart of a servant. I want to know You more and be filled with your thoughts.

Philippians 2:5-11

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus, thank you for coming to earth as the greatest gift from God to mankind. Your sacrifice is the best gift ever.

An Uncommon Leader

I've been reading the book of Exodus lately and thinking about Moses as an example for leadership, but probably not in all the ways we might expect.  There's no question that Moses was one of the most influential leaders in all of history as he took a scraggly group of slaves and over the course of 40 years transformed them into a cohesive nation.  They lacked purpose, direction and unity when they started out on their own.  God chose Moses to lead them from slavery into the promised land - what was it that made Moses such an uncommon leader? First of all, Moses would not have made it through the screening processes we have for approving leaders in this century.  Remember, he killed an Egyptian, enacted martial law, became the judge, jury and executioner when he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave.  He ran away and hid for 40 years in the desert before he returned to Egypt again (he probably never thought he was going back).   In addition to a...

Acceptance, Validation and Affirmation

In a world where there is an almost greedy grappling for external validation and feedback, I find myself sometimes wondering how to center my identity in Christ alone and not in what others think of me.  The acceptance of others can often be dependent upon what they might receive from that relationship while the acceptance of God is unconditional.  The approval of others changes from day to day and cannot be a strong foundation for security in my value and purpose.  The one thing I truly long for is to someday hear from the only true Judge, "well done, good and faithful servant."  This collection of truths from the gospel of John serves to remind me that I find my acceptance, my approval, validation and affirmation from Jesus alone and my identity is firm in the Word of God.   John 1:12 I am a child of God - Oh to think that He would adopt me into His family.  That He would call me His own dear child, that I would be considered His inheritance, that ...

Prayers for Your Children

My adult children have all left the nest, the last one off to college just this past month.  As they find their new independence and live far away from home, I am reminded of my great calling to pray for them regularly.  The best way to pray for someone is to follow the models we find in scripture, so I started with this Levitical blessing from Numbers 6:24-27.   The LORD bless you... We pray for our children that God would bless their lives, knowing that in this world there are many troubles and He never promised to keep us from them (John 16:33).  However, we know that blessings follow obedience and blessings are always found when living in His will.  We pray that God's good gifts would come to our children (Luke 11:11-13) because He is a good Father and He loves our kids just as much as we do!  May He bless them with peace that is beyond understanding no matter what challenges they face (Philippians 4:4-7).  May He bless them with good jo...
