God is my Shield and Fortress (11)

Today we are going to pray through the armor of God. This prayer in Ephesians 6 shows us how to claim what God has given us as we fight against temptation, against persecution or the lies of Satan that threaten to take over our thoughts. This is a scripture that could be prayed every day - bookmark this so you can go back to it when you need it!

Worship our God, our Shield and Protector, the One who fights for us

Lord, thank you for being the One upon whom I can place all of my trust. You are the place I run to when I am afraid and it is in You alone that I find protection and security. You are my strength, my rock, and my fortress.

Psalm 18:1-2

I love you, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Today may I put on the armor of salvation, claiming Your protection over my soul, my thoughts, my actions, heart, my faith, all of me.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints

Pray for the belt of truth - Satan is the father of lies (see John 8); Truth, however, sets us free and it is truth that binds our faith together.

John 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Pray for the breastplate of righteousness - that you would know in your heart that God has covered you with the righteousness of Jesus.

Philippians 3:8-9

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith

Put on the shoes of readiness for the gospel of peace - walk out your faith, take the next steps God is calling you to, live for Jesus and bring His gospel wherever you go.

Romans 10;15

As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Pick up the Shield of Faith - The Lord is your defender, He is your hiding place and protector when you feel under attack. He is your refuge and your shield in this life.

Psalm 18:1-2

I love you, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Put on the helmet of salvation

1 Thessalonians 5:8-9

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ

Pick up the Sword of the Spirit - which is the Word of God.  Cling to God's words as your weapon against falsehood and temptation.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God

Lord, just like the Apostle Paul, I can sometimes rest on all the "good" things I think I've done, but may I count all of that just a useless as garbage, because I need Your righteousness that only comes through faith.  Wherever I feel strong in my faith, may I lay it down to You in humility, and wherever I feel weak, may I put on Your righteousness by faith.

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

Lord, as I pray through the armor of God, I realize that each item I am to put on is actually a representation of one of Your attributes. What I am to wear each day to defend myself against evil is YOU. You are the truth, the peace, the shield, my righteousness and my salvation. May I learn to abide in You each day, to be clothed in You and to live in Your presence where I will find true freedom.

John 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

An Uncommon Leader

I've been reading the book of Exodus lately and thinking about Moses as an example for leadership, but probably not in all the ways we might expect.  There's no question that Moses was one of the most influential leaders in all of history as he took a scraggly group of slaves and over the course of 40 years transformed them into a cohesive nation.  They lacked purpose, direction and unity when they started out on their own.  God chose Moses to lead them from slavery into the promised land - what was it that made Moses such an uncommon leader? First of all, Moses would not have made it through the screening processes we have for approving leaders in this century.  Remember, he killed an Egyptian, enacted martial law, became the judge, jury and executioner when he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave.  He ran away and hid for 40 years in the desert before he returned to Egypt again (he probably never thought he was going back).   In addition to a...

Acceptance, Validation and Affirmation

In a world where there is an almost greedy grappling for external validation and feedback, I find myself sometimes wondering how to center my identity in Christ alone and not in what others think of me.  The acceptance of others can often be dependent upon what they might receive from that relationship while the acceptance of God is unconditional.  The approval of others changes from day to day and cannot be a strong foundation for security in my value and purpose.  The one thing I truly long for is to someday hear from the only true Judge, "well done, good and faithful servant."  This collection of truths from the gospel of John serves to remind me that I find my acceptance, my approval, validation and affirmation from Jesus alone and my identity is firm in the Word of God.   John 1:12 I am a child of God - Oh to think that He would adopt me into His family.  That He would call me His own dear child, that I would be considered His inheritance, that ...

Prayers for Your Children

My adult children have all left the nest, the last one off to college just this past month.  As they find their new independence and live far away from home, I am reminded of my great calling to pray for them regularly.  The best way to pray for someone is to follow the models we find in scripture, so I started with this Levitical blessing from Numbers 6:24-27.   The LORD bless you... We pray for our children that God would bless their lives, knowing that in this world there are many troubles and He never promised to keep us from them (John 16:33).  However, we know that blessings follow obedience and blessings are always found when living in His will.  We pray that God's good gifts would come to our children (Luke 11:11-13) because He is a good Father and He loves our kids just as much as we do!  May He bless them with peace that is beyond understanding no matter what challenges they face (Philippians 4:4-7).  May He bless them with good jo...
