God is Merciful (20)

 Wonderful, merciful Savior

Precious Redeemer and Friend

Who would have thought that a Lamb

Could rescue the souls of men

— Dawn Rodgers, Eric Wyse

Mercy is God's kindness to relent from giving us exactly what we deserve as sinners who have ignored His commands, stepped outside of His boundaries, and dismissed His authority over us. We deserve punishment, even death, for our actions, but God is a merciful God, providing a better way to satisfy the requirements of the law. Today as we pray, may we remember that God poured out His mercy upon us, although we were not deserving, and in the same way, He asks us to grant mercy to others.

Worship the God of Mercy

Lord, You showed us what You desire to see in us by living it out in the life of Jesus. You are humble and gentle, You experienced grief, loss, pain, and hunger, and You showed mercy and kindness even when You were persecuted. I desire to live in Your blessing, to know that following You means having the same humble heart, the same mercy for those who are unkind, and to have a heart that seeks Your kingdom first.

Matthew 5:3-10

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Lord, You granted mercy upon me abundantly, not sparingly. You not only withheld the penalty of sin (eternal death) from me, but instead You made me alive in You. I could do nothing to pay the debt I owed because of my sin, but You paid it for me! Your kind and merciful gaze upon this sinner reminds me of how worthy You are of my worship.

Ephesians 2:4-5

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God

Lord, I know sometimes I get it wrong and focus on the failures of others, wishing they would get justice while ignoring my own inability to live according to Your ways.  Give me a humble heart so I can focus on doing the right thing, walking in Your ways, while being full of mercy for those around me who struggle to follow Your ways.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

Lord, even though I know it does not please You when we turn away from You, I am so blessed to know that You are a God of grace and mercy. You long for us to return to You, to repent, turn around and change our ways so that You can show Your nature to us - that You are gracious, merciful, slow to anger, abounding in love...

Joel 2:12-13

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13     and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
    and he relents over disaster.

Praying Scripture Over Your Life

God shapes the world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil.  — E.M. Bounds Many years ago I began to develop a longing for a deeper and richer prayer life, to figure out what it meant to be a prayer warrior. An acquaintance of the time (a missionary who had a heart to build up others) gave me a little prayer book that helped guide my time in prayer and became a part of regular time with God. There is no doubt that prayer is powerful, but many times when we sit down to pray, we can feel at a loss for words.  How do I pray through this situation?  How does prayer not become rote or surface level?  How can I enrich my prayer life and make it a rich experience in God’s presence, drawing closer to Him and truly approaching the throne with confidence?   There are many prayers recorded throughout the scriptures that can guide us in our prayers and by using these scriptures, we can be c...

Day 1 - Praying Scripture and Walking with God

In worship, God imparts himself to us.  — C.S.Lewis As we begin a journey of praying through scripture, each day will be focused on the four elements, which consist of: worship, appropriating truth (spiritual growth), walking in the light (confession), and knowing God more as well as a specific focus to pray for different people each day.  This focus is intended to guide you through a time of prayer - for yourself, for your loved ones, for your school, etc.  Remember last week I introduced the idea of walking with God as though we were in the garden with Him again and to walk in the light with Him through this life. This imagery along with the key themes found in the Lord’s prayer lead us to the acronym WALK.   W orship the God who hears our prayers A ppropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith L ight - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God K now Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily Before ...

Prayers for Your Children

My adult children have all left the nest, the last one off to college just this past month.  As they find their new independence and live far away from home, I am reminded of my great calling to pray for them regularly.  The best way to pray for someone is to follow the models we find in scripture, so I started with this Levitical blessing from Numbers 6:24-27.   The LORD bless you... We pray for our children that God would bless their lives, knowing that in this world there are many troubles and He never promised to keep us from them (John 16:33).  However, we know that blessings follow obedience and blessings are always found when living in His will.  We pray that God's good gifts would come to our children (Luke 11:11-13) because He is a good Father and He loves our kids just as much as we do!  May He bless them with peace that is beyond understanding no matter what challenges they face (Philippians 4:4-7).  May He bless them with good jo...
