The Rock I stand upon (21)

A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing

Martin Luther

When I have taken walks upon the north shore of Lake Superior, I have always been amazed by the basalt and the rock formations that stand so solidly against the beating of the waves on the lake. I have stood high upon the rock and looked down at the water and understood what it means to find safety and security from the wind and waves which tumultuously pound upon the rocks. The imagery of feeling swept away by the current of fears and worries or drowning in troubles and sorrows leads us to the Rock that is high above the fray, solid and secure. God is our Rock when we are facing uncertainty, anxiety, grief, difficult circumstances, and more. He is a strong foundation for us to build upon and He will not move or change despite the always changing tides of culture.

Worship God , Our Rock

Lord, when I am faced with fears and overwhelmed by life, how comforting to know that I can come to You, my Rock and take refuge high above the storms of life in the security of Your deliverance and salvation. You are my rescuer and You make my steps firm and secure.

2 Samuel 22: 2-7, 17-20, 32-35 (David's prayer when God delivered him from Saul)

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
    my stronghold and my refuge,
    my savior; you save me from violence.

I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.
For the waves of death encompassed me,

the torrents of destruction assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me;

    the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the Lord;

to my God I called.
From his temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry came to his ears......

He sent from on high, he took me;
    he drew me out of many waters.
 He rescued me from my strong enemy,
    from those who hated me,
    for they were too mighty for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.

He brought me out into a broad place;

    he rescued me, because he delighted in me.....

“For who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is a rock, except our God?
 This God is my strong refuge
    and has made my way blameless.
 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
    and set me secure on the heights....

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Lord, I believe that my household, my life, will be secure and stand the tests of life if I stand strongly upon Your words. May I live in obedience to Your word and may I place my trust in You for my security, not finances, position, power, popularity, or anything that can shift like the sand.

Matthew 7:24

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God

Lord, You are the foundation of the church, and as part of the church, I stand on Your truth.  I don't feel worthy to be called a part of a holy priesthood; forgive me for where I fail in offering you spiritual sacrifices or obeying Your word.  May my life be built upon Your strong foundation and build up the church as You intended.

2 Peter 2:4-7

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,  you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”

 and

“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

Lord, You are so kind and your fatherly support lifts me up regularly. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, lead me to the place where I stand in confidence because I stand on Your word. You are my refuge and strong tower when I am feeling faint and overwhelmed.

Psalm 61: 1-3

Hear my cry, O God,
    listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
    when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
    that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
    a strong tower against the enemy.

31 Holy Spirit

The Christian life isn’t difficult, it’s impossible—without the power of the Holy Spirit. – Bill Bright – W orship the God in 3 persons: Father, Son and Spirit I praise You Father for sending us the Spirit, our Advocate, who came into the world to teach us and live with us. John 14: 25-27 “All this I have spoken while still with you.   But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.   Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. A ppropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith Lord, Your Spirit is here to show that it is only through believing in Christ that we can be saved. May I, being a Spirit-filled believer, share this message with those around me. Your Spirit is also given so that we might see that only in Jesus i...

30 - Man of Sorrows

Man of sorrows what a name for the Son of God, who came ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah, what a Savior! P. P. Bliss The Lord is near the broken hearted. Oh what a comfort these words are when pain runs deep and sorrow fills our souls. The weight of the pain in the world is heavy these days and many of us carry much deeper more personal sorrows as well. When tragedy hits, we cannot rewind the tape, we cannot "fix" what went wrong, and we cannot claim to erase sorrows for friends and family. Jesus can heal a broken heart and He can truly be an empathetic friend, a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. He Himself experienced the depth of sorrow caused by the hands of evil men, the pain of betrayal, physical agony we can't imagine, the loss of friends, the slander of His name. He knows our pain. He can walk beside us in these sorrowful days and He will never leave us. W orship Jesus, the man of sorrows Lord, when I am feeling beaten down, depressed, or suffer...

How to Shepherd like Him

   For our first day of inservice this fall my superintendent showed the funny commercial where cowboys are riding around in the fields herding cats.  Some days, that's definitely what this job feels like if you've ever tried to teach a cat to obey (dogs love to do tricks; cats not so much!).   But I think a more apt description of my job (as a school leader) is that of a shepherd.  I read John 10 this morning thinking about how much I appreciate the imagery of God as my shepherd: John 10:2 - 3 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.   The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. The first thing I notice about Jesus as my shepherd is that He KNOWS me and I know Him.  We have a valuable relationship and I trust that He has my best interests at heart.  He knows my name and He leads me individually even as a part of the whole flock. ...
