26 - Almighty, Omnipotent, All-powerful God

“Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”

-C.S. Lewis

When I view the majesty of the mountains, rising up thousands of feet into the sky, the top obscured by clouds, I stand in awe.  God's omnipotence is on full display in creation and nature; fierce winds, earthquakes, lightning and thunder declaring God's all powerful nature to us tiny humans.  God's ultimate power was on display especially on resurrection day - Jesus conquered the grave, reversing the effects of nature and bursting forth in glorious power.

We may be facing challenges that seem insurmountable, or fighting battles that feel unwinnable, but we serve a God who is our power when we are weak.  Let us never diminish God to human status, focusing only on the character traits we can understand.  God, like Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia, is quite ferocious in power, but He is good and we can trust Him to use His power for His great purposes.

Worship the God of Power

Lord, nothing is too difficult for You. How comforting to know that I serve the great and mighty God whose purposes never fail is on my side. You are great and mighty.

Jeremiah 32:17-19

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord Almighty, great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.

Appropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith

Lord, open my eyes to see and live out the incomparably great power for those who believe. That mighty strength that raised Christ from the dead lives in me. Today, may I walk in Your power, in Your strength as I am so aware of my own weakness. When I am weak, You are strong.

Ephesians 1:18-21

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Light - Walk in the light by openly confessing your sins and need for God

Lord, If I ever came face to face with a display of Your great power, I would repent in dust and ashes like Job did.  You are beyond my understanding and Your ways will always prevail.

Job 42:2-6

“I know that you can do all things,
    and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
    things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
‘Hear, and I will speak;
    I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
    but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself,
    and repent in dust and ashes.”

Know Him more and more as you spend time with Him daily

You are the God who never tires and who grants power to the weak, the tired, and the worn down. You promise us that those who wait on the Lord will have renewed strength and will soar like eagles and run without fainting. Your power is indescribable.

Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

31 Holy Spirit

The Christian life isn’t difficult, it’s impossible—without the power of the Holy Spirit. – Bill Bright – W orship the God in 3 persons: Father, Son and Spirit I praise You Father for sending us the Spirit, our Advocate, who came into the world to teach us and live with us. John 14: 25-27 “All this I have spoken while still with you.   But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.   Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. A ppropriate the truth of scripture as you grow in your walk of faith Lord, Your Spirit is here to show that it is only through believing in Christ that we can be saved. May I, being a Spirit-filled believer, share this message with those around me. Your Spirit is also given so that we might see that only in Jesus i...

30 - Man of Sorrows

Man of sorrows what a name for the Son of God, who came ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah, what a Savior! P. P. Bliss The Lord is near the broken hearted. Oh what a comfort these words are when pain runs deep and sorrow fills our souls. The weight of the pain in the world is heavy these days and many of us carry much deeper more personal sorrows as well. When tragedy hits, we cannot rewind the tape, we cannot "fix" what went wrong, and we cannot claim to erase sorrows for friends and family. Jesus can heal a broken heart and He can truly be an empathetic friend, a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. He Himself experienced the depth of sorrow caused by the hands of evil men, the pain of betrayal, physical agony we can't imagine, the loss of friends, the slander of His name. He knows our pain. He can walk beside us in these sorrowful days and He will never leave us. W orship Jesus, the man of sorrows Lord, when I am feeling beaten down, depressed, or suffer...

How to Shepherd like Him

   For our first day of inservice this fall my superintendent showed the funny commercial where cowboys are riding around in the fields herding cats.  Some days, that's definitely what this job feels like if you've ever tried to teach a cat to obey (dogs love to do tricks; cats not so much!).   But I think a more apt description of my job (as a school leader) is that of a shepherd.  I read John 10 this morning thinking about how much I appreciate the imagery of God as my shepherd: John 10:2 - 3 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.   The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. The first thing I notice about Jesus as my shepherd is that He KNOWS me and I know Him.  We have a valuable relationship and I trust that He has my best interests at heart.  He knows my name and He leads me individually even as a part of the whole flock. ...
